Instructional Day
The instructional day is from 9:15 to 3:45.  Students should arrive between 8:45 to 9:10.  Students who live within 1.5 miles of the school are walkers.  The walk zone includes the neighboring housing development of The Reserve, although temporary bus service is provided while construction continues around the school.   Staff members are on duty at various arrival and dismissal location sites to ensure the safety of all children, whether the child is a walker, a bus rider, or a carpooler.

Class Organization
HDES is growing rapidly.   Class size is between 20-24 for grades K-3 and 24-29 for fourth and fifth grades.  Listed below is the number of classes at each grade level:

Grade Level No. Classes for 2004-2005 No. Classes for 2005-2006 No. Classes for 2006-2007 No. of Classes for 2007-08
K 6 6 9 9
1 4 7 7 10
2 4 5 8 8
3 4 6 6 8
4 4 4 6 6
5 3 4 4 6
Special Ed 2 3 3 3

Our goal is to avoid re-organization after school begins.  In order to form this many classes, some teacher assistant positions were converted to teacher positions.

How Teachers Determine Where Child Is Performing
For students who have been attending school, each sending school will forward the complete cumulative record for your child.  In addition to the usual demographic and health data about your child, profile cards, containing specific information about your child' performance in math, reading, and writing, will be included.  Teachers will also perform informal assessments at the beginning of the year.

Bus Riding Determination

Students who live greater than 1.5 miles from the school are bused.  This distance is determined by driving the shortest distance from the school to the child’s home.  Many of the homes within The Reserve neighborhood are less than 1.5 miles from Highcroft and will therefore, will be in the walk zone.
Students who live less than 1.5 miles from Highcroft but along Green Hope School Road may request a courtesy stop on Green Hope School Road, which is heavily traveled and does not have sidewalks.

Grading System Used

Highcroft will use the Standards Based Grading System that all WCPSS schools use.   Student performance will be assessed on grade level objectives for each quarter.
Rather than letter grades, students receive numerical grades.
